Veggie Benny

Submitted by Finn

John's Place is somewhat of an institution in Victoria. My wife and I went on our second date here. Honest, home-style cooking keeps hungry customers coming back. They were also one of the forerunners in the slow-food movement, a back-lash against the zillions of fast-food joints that dot the landscape. I kind of wish they had moved even slower on my breakfast today. All the right ingredients were there, but I just found it really bland.
Pacific Benny

What's with 50's themed restaurants? Aside from the decor and Elvis, Elvis, Elvis coursing through the stereo, they never really serve 50's style food. I guess it's hard to attract a strong customer base with Jell-O salads, Minute Rice and Tang on the menu. The Sunshine Diner is no exception, 50's themed serving modern food. My Pacific Benny featured baby shrimp and asparagus, covered with 'our' hollandaise sauce. By 'our' I think they mean created from scratch. In any case the hollandaise was good, and so was the rest of the plate. Now if they would just think about changing the decor.
